One of my favourite places in Tohoku, the northern region of Japan, is Yamagata.

The vibe is so chill, it’s walkable, there’s stunning nature, and...it’s known as the Fruit Kingdom.

Yes, it’s true, Yamagata really is the Fruit Kingdom of Tohoku!

They are known for—and are extremely proud of—their cherries!

Yamagata’s charm has captured my heart!

Okay, moving on. Let’s talk about burgers.

I came across Fledged Burger when I was browsing through Yamagata tourism websites. To my delight, I found an article that mentioned vegetarian options.

Having lived in rural Japan for almost 3 years, I’ve really missed veggie burgers. I’m so grateful that I found Fledged by chance.

The restaurant is very cosy, with a pretty cool aesthetic. And they have a takeaway option.

They serve meat but have four vegetarian burgers. What's better? The menu is both in Japanese and English.

You can choose from the following options:

A. Vegetable (¥913)

B. Vegetable Avocado (¥1166)

C. Teriyaki Vege (¥913)

D. Teriyaki Vegetable Avocado (¥1166)

I’ve had A and D, and they really hit the spot.

These burgers come with a handful of chips (fries) on the side. Tomato sauce and mustard are available, free of charge.

Let’s not forget the extra toppings: pineapple, avocado, pickles, jalapeno, egg and cheese.

There are sides too: a bigger serving of chips, onion rings, and assorted pickles.

If you’re travelling with someone who eats meat, the burger options are plentiful.

My partner does and she really enjoyed the one she chose.

Just be warned that it can get busy during the usual lunch and dinner rush.

Indoor seating is available but there are only 24 seats. I usually visit just before or after the rush hour.

They are located in a building on the side of a quiet street. Keep an eye out because it can be easy to miss.

The overhead sign is white, with ‘FLEDGED BURGER’ in red text.

If you’re driving, be aware that the car park is small and spaces are very limited. When I visited, I found a cheap parking close by.

If you’re using public transport, there are quite a few buses around Yamagata station.

If you find yourself in Yamagata craving a burger...try FLEDGED BURGER!

Bonus tip: try one of Yamagata’s Sun&Liv fruit juices (pear, peach, apple, persimmon), you won’t regret it.

Until next time,
